403 W. 43rd St. – Midtown West
Last weekend when we hit the art shows Uptown, we decided to check out a new spot we found in New York magazine called Elsewhere. I recommend this spot highly if you happen to be doing something in the vast food wasteland that is Midtown. It isn’t fancy, but it’s homey and the food is down home southern-style. We asked for garden seating and were pleasantly surprised by this lovely space. It felt like we were nowhere near 43rd St!
We ordered some cokes and were advised that they don’t carry coke, but they do make a few sodas in house and carry several gourmet bottles. I tried the pomegranite soda and Steve had the Virgil’s root beer. The homemade soda was great…very subtle, not too fizzy and based with lemon. Yum. I also had a fantastic virgin ‘Bloody Bloody Mary Jackson’. I’ve got a ridiculous cold and didn’t want alcohol, but I tell you that would have been the best bloody in town. They put house pickled green beans in it instead of celery and they use sriracha sauce instead of tabasco. Smooth and delicious.
Steve had the Chicken Leg and a Waffle for $13, which was out of this world. They butcher whole chickens daily and use the legs for brunch and the breasts for the fried chicken dinner. I had a roasted Leg of Lamb Sandwich with Horseradish, Eggplant, Tomato Jam, Piave Jus & Green Salad for $14. This is something you’d make at home but never expect at a restaurant. Fresh carved medium rare lamb with jus on an open faced sandwich of olive bread smeared with potato jam and sprinkled with freshly grated horseradish? Wow.
I might even say this place is worth a trip to 43rd & Ninth.
