Jack’s Restaurant & Bar
‘Global Cuisine’

147 W. 40th St. – Midtown West
Jack’s is an old standby in the Fashion/Garment District. They describe their cuisine as ‘Global Food, Local Address.’ While that’s pushing it, I would say they serve an ‘eclectic mix’ of solidly good food. I’ve been going there for years and have had business lunches, cocktails & tapas with friends from work as well as dinner there. I must say I’ve never had a bad meal.
I am particularly fond of all of the lunch salads. On my most recent visit, the special of the day was sauteed soft shell crabs on a salad. I regret not taking a photo! Not only was it a beautiful dish, it was really outstanding. It isn’t often I splurge over the lunch hour, or even have a lunch hour for that matter. But I had not been there since my time at Liz Claiborne on the corner of 40th and Broadway, which is now over 3 years ago! Jack’s has not lost its touch. However, the business lunch crowd is loud as hell. When I tell you it’s loud, I mean you must actually raise your voice to be heard. Low roar is how I’d classify it.
If you work in Midtown and need to do a biz lunch or are looking to have a glass of vino with friends after work, this is a reliable spot. It’s one of the few and far between. Order Tapas from the Bar menu. There are some truly delectable but standard bites. You won’t believe it, but this spot is owned by the same group who owns Mustang Sally’s, Mustang Harrys, and Seven. This is a more sophisticated option for sure.
Additional Tips: Croton Reservoir is another reliable food and drink spot on 40th. Fashion Forty used to be a haunt as well, but on my last visit they were ‘out of red wine.’ Really?! The pickings are slim in that hood, so give it a try. I recall great martinis.
