Fraunces Tavern is a historic landmark built in 1719. It was originally built as a private residence but has had many purposes since including Inn and Tavern. It is most famous for George Washington’s Farewell speech to his officers at the end of the Revolution. The site has a full museum on the upper levels which has been open for 100 years.
Recently, there was a huge renovation of this space. Although controversial because of the historic significance of this site, the end result is spectacular. Attention was paid to the restoration and at the same time well-designed modern elements were added to make this a current and relevant downtown restaurant and bar. The space is stunning. The parlor has been converted to a cozy cocktail area and there are 3 bars; a small whiskey bar, a main bar area (The Porterhouse) with dining space, and a rear bar. There is also a gorgeous wine vault that looks like it can be reserved for private events. In addition, there is a gigantic dining area.
Regarding food, we have had many of their bar menu items and have had lunch there as well. Everything has been good, not stellar. However, one night we made dinner reservations when my dad was in town. We spent the day bar hopping and we could not have ended in a more perfect place. We had fish and chips, bangers and mash, and shepherd’s pie. Truly, the bangers and mash was the most outstanding I’ve had. The shepherd’s pie was a bit ho hum, but the fish and chips was also pretty great. I’d recommend this spot for a Fall or Winter evening filled with good food and good beer.
Hi guys,
Just like to point out that The Porterhouse Fraunces Tavern is actually and Irish/American bar, not British/American. Is it possible to change this? Would appreciate it.
Many thanks
Fiona
Thanks and sorry. I guess I know that from the Bangers and Mash but hoped there was some historical connection with the building! Happy to change it right away. We love the place.
