China Grill
After all these years, I wondered if China Grill was ‘over’. The place was a mob scene, perhaps because we went during Restaurant Week. The decor is always impressive with the high ceilings, red circular lights and huge windows, but the cavernous space is LOUD. We could not hear one another over dinner, which was especially unfortunate for our guest visiting from Taiwan. By the end of the meal we were also overcome by HEAT and had to get outside immediately. I do recommend this space for large parties only because most of the tables hold 6.
The food was solid, consistent with what I remember. But Chinese fusion is what it is. The concept here is a ‘sharing menu’, so it’s fun to taste everything (just like our China trips). Our favorite dish, as always, was the super cool deep fried ‘Crispy Spinach’. We got an extra with the dessert for $5 called ‘Bananas in a Box’, which was very tasty and creative. The most enjoyable part was sharing with old friends from Liz Claiborne! Terry McMahon, Elizabeth Smith and Hestia Hsiung joined for this meal. Carey, we missed you!!!
This was back when we first started last year. For a couple months we took food photos in restaurants…we learned fast enough it’s no fun, it’s embarrassing, and usually they suck :). Now I rely on the professionals!
