Papatzul
Mexican, Local Favorite

55 Grand Street – SoHo
I can’t say enough good things about this place. The atmosphere is really authentic Mexican, warm and inviting. The food is CHEAP and really delicious. And best of all the margaritas are tasty and potent. A pitcher is $18.00. Where is there a better deal than that in this city? We were there over President’s Weekend and went back with a friend this weekend. Can’t say there are many places we do that, so I think our actions speak louder than words. We were relatively lucky it was not crowded either time as you can see from my photos. I can imagine it would not be as fun if the bar in the front is packed. The dining room in the rear has ample space. Must have: Ceviche Papatzul!!
LUNCH MENU
Ceviche Papatzul – Citrus Marinated Shrimp, Sea Scallops and Fish of the Day
Budin al Pasilla – Layered Tortilla Casserole with Pasilla Chile Sauce, Shredded Chicken, Queso Oaxaca, Black Beans and Cream
Tacos de Pescado Estilo Baja – Fish Tacos Baja Style
DINNER MENU (Second Visit)
Ceviche Papatzul – Citrus Marinated Shrimp, Sea Scallops and Fish of the Day
Flautas de Pollo con Salsa Borracha – Crisp Corn Tortillas filled with Chicken and Mushrooms Topped with Shredded Lettuce, Cream and Drunken Pasilla Salsa
Tacos de Pescado Estilo Baja – Fish Tacos Baja Style
Carnitas – Soft Pork Confit Tacos with Salsa Fresca
I do have one menu item I’ve tried that I would not recommend. It is the Chili. It is a matter of personal taste, really. It has a cinnamon flavor and I far prefer a spicy chili.

We decided to go back to Papatzul for a rather early dinner on New Year’s Eve 12/31/12. We were seeing a show later and wanted to get away from New Year’s hype and prix fixe menus. We have some new photos and finally a pic of Steve’s favorite fish tacos!
We tried the Sopes con Chorizo as an Appetizer to share. The dish is 3 mini corn masa cakes filled with chorizo, refried beans, cream and queso fresco, which is a soft cheese. We both did tacos for dinner. Steve, his standard Tacos de Pescado Estilo Baja (fish tacos, Baja style) and I tried the shrimp tacos (cameron). We also had TWO pitchers of margaritas to prep for NYE crowds. We had to get ready for amateur hour, which, as expected, was the case.
