Wine Bar/Restaurant

90 W. Houston St. – SoHo
Bar Henry is a tough to spot subterranean bar/restaurant on Houston. During daylight it is barely noticeable. The bar is classic New York with a long mahogany bar, black and white floors, copper ceiling and exposed brick walls. Their specialty is wine. They offer a huge selection of bottles, any of which you can get by the 1/2 bottle. Once a bottle is opened, they create a list on the mirror behind the bar where you can buy either the remaining 1/2 bottle or by the glass. It makes for an interesting selection each time you visit.
We continue to go back, as we like the wine and the $1.00 oyster happy hour until 7pm. We’ve tried just about all of the appetizers, which are quite good. They offer a classic bistro menu, nothing over the top, but very solid. It has a great location for meeting after work, then moving on somewhere else downtown.
We revisited this bar for the first time in a few months on 9/24/11. Unfortunately, there were about 5 people at the bar and not a soul in the dining room. I am sorry to say I believe Bar Henry is on deathwatch. It is a shame. The food is above par and the wine is fantastic. Stop in for a glass before its gone.
Bar Henry added wine and martini glass candles going down the steps to attract attention (along with the neon sign). They’ve also placed a menu box up on the street level. Let’s hope it works!
