Five Points – CLOSED
Five Points is a sister restaurant of Cookshop and Hundred Acres. All are farm to table concept restaurants. The atmosphere at Five Points and Hundred Acres is better than Cookshop, but all three are relatively equal in terms of food.
Five Points opens with a bar area and has more secluded seating in the rear. Down the center of the room is a waterfall and a running water trough serving as the dividing rail between the tables. The room is cozy and warm, but the sound really carries. We were there quite early before a Public Theater performance of King Lear (with all of the old people who were also headed there) and it was only half full. I cannot imagine how loud it must be at around 8:30!
We ate fairly lightly, at least as lightly as one can in a meat-centric environment! We were concerned about being too full while sitting for 3+ hours in a theater. I did make the mistake of having a drink which almost caused me to nod off, but how could I pass up a homemade pickle martini? Delicious.
OUR MENU:
Tuscan Kale Salad 11.
Lemon-Anchovy Dressing, Pecorino
Stuffed Savoy Cabbage 10.
Finger Lakes Braised Beef, Currants, Roasted Tomato
Pork Belly Pizza 15.
Roasted Onion, Aleppo Pepper, Oregano, Crescenza Cheese
I was intrigued by the idea of a kale salad. It seemed to have been very lightly steamed to bring up the color and flavor as well as make it palatable. The preparation was like a traditional Caesar salad with Pecorino. Overall, great flavor but the serving could have been larger. I had about 6 leaves on my plate. Steve started with the stuffed cabbage. Just like my Hungarian ‘Baba’ used to make. I’d go back for a plate of my own. It’s been a long time since having those flavors! Next up, we had to go for the pork. We shared a 4 slice pork belly pizza. Wow, not your average pizza. This dish MUST be shared as a single diner may have cardiac arrest. It had great caramelized onion flavor and the Crescenza cheese was a perfect complement to the crispy pork belly. Yum. This would be a great bar pie after a few craft beers!
