The Wren is located on the old Sala space, RIP. And it is a welcome change. The Wren is owned by the team from Wilfie & Nell, a lovely little spot in the West Village. This is a far more spacious version. The atmosphere is quite warm despite high ceilings and a fairly cavernous space. We dropped by early during a Giants game to grab some food in a spot that was civilized with no TV on site.
We’d been looking forward to trying the food. Their menu is short, sweet and well thought out. But of course it was a Sunday which means brunch. We feared the same old menu, but were pleasantly surprised at the offerings. The bartender recommended the SOFT-POACHED HEN EGG ON A BACON & CHEDDAR BISCUIT, BRAISED MUSHROOMS AND FRISEÉ. He said it is the best item. For some reason we both chose not to listen, but will definitely try it next time! I cannot tell you how pleased we both were with our brunch.
SKATE SANDWICH WITH FRIES …………………………………………………………………… 14 TARTAR SAUCE AND PICKLED ONIONS
BROOKLYN SALVATORE RICOTTA AND BACON TOAST ………………………………..9 ROSEMARY HONEY
Steve’s skate sandwich was so fresh and perfectly done. My plate was really a surprise. It was sourdough toast topped with thick sliced bacon with a side of fresh ricotta cheese and a dish of honey to ‘schemer’ on the bacon toast. Wow. What a fantastic idea.
I think I’ve had just about everything on the menu at The Wren NYC but I would definitely recommend the Oxtail Marmalade! But everything is delicious at The Wren.
